Here are a few useful links:

  • Back Mechanic by Stuart McGill is a great resource for learning about your back and how to care for it. I liked the diagrams on how to perform many daily life movements without putting unnecessary load on your spine.
  • Metamucil and Colace for a happier GI system after all of your post-surgery narcotics.
  • Ice packs to reduce inflammation. Buy a couple. Rotate them as needed. Ice worked better than any meds for me. Bags of frozen peas work great, too.
  • Lumbar support pillow for making your car seat or desk chair easier on your back.
  • Logroll technique for getting in and out of bed. To reduce the load on your core, use your arms to lift yourself up or ease yourself down.
  • r/Microdiscectomy for reading experiences from others who have gone through the surgery. Lots of good info is buried in old posts.
  • Get Back To It Podcast from the National Spine Health Foundation. Inspiring stories of people who had discectomies (and other spine surgeries) and got back on with their active lives or athletic pursuits.
  • Peter Attia Podcast a great conversation between Stuart McGill and Peter Attia regarding back pain.
  • Swimming is a great exercise for patients with back pain issues.
